A Falmouth student has been chosen by Key Network member Braydilks for a commercial commission – before she’s even graduated.

Third-year student, Emma Atkinson, 21, studying a BA Hons degree in illustration at University College Falmouth, so impressed lawyers from the Truro and Falmouth firm, that they awarded her the contract to create original designs for their new website that goes live this week.

The firm, formerly known as Bray & Dilks, has been working with Penryn marketing agency Eight Wire on a new website, corporate identity and a slight change to its business name.

They encountered Emma’s work while looking for inspiration for artwork to enhance their new website.

“We spent a good deal of time thinking about artwork suitable for a solicitor’s firm in Cornwall”, explained Nigel Fenton, partner in Braydilks.

“Pictures of people and iconic pictures of Cornwall have been used by many other solicitors – so we were on the hunt for something original for us.

“Falmouth’s student illustrators faced a stiff challenge with great creativity – the students submitted very impressive work and it was difficult to choose. However, when we saw Emma’s work, we were very impressed by the originality and style which suited our new look exactly.”

Emma’s originals will now feature prominently on the firm’s website and the four originals will hang in the practice’s Truro office.

She said: “I’m hoping to enter a career in commercial illustration so it’s been very helpful to have some professional experience. This is a great opportunity and I’m really pleased to have been able to undertake the commission.”

The commissioning process was part of a new scheme at the university that invites companies to write a creative brief for the students to respond to. Known as “the Agency”, interested students put forward creative work in an effort to win the paid contract.
